PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This was a class project where I had to tell the story of an architect but on the surface of a cube. I chose Antoni Gaudí as my architect. When I was drawing sketches for the layout of my cube, I placed a heavy emphasis on getting the “flow” of the cube right. I wanted to make sure that viewers knew exactly how to turn the cube to read the information in order and have it be a natural progression across the cube. I wanted the cube to tell the story of Gaudí in chronological order and the faces of the cube would work more or less like an abstract timeline. Chronological order felt right to me because of the way Gaudí’s architectural career evolved over the course of his life. I wanted to use the Swiss system with a modern visual twist because I liked the idea of Gaudí’s old, traditional architectural style being juxtaposed with a modern visual design. I put the design into Adobe Illustrator and made a number of iterations on the design with many physical mockups along the way. In the final design, I used small graphical elements integrated with the images used to guide the viewer in the correct direction of where to turn the cube, keeping in mind the natural flow of text in the mind of English speakers. I felt that the use of the Swiss system but with gradients for the background was successful in contrasting with the gothic revival and modernisme style of Gaudí’s architectural works.
